Style | Window Pane Plaid and Sunday Stress

I was asked to teach an upcoming lesson on Adversity and committed to planning ahead instead of waiting till the night before like I usually do.  I am an excellent procrastinator, but I really wanted to take the time research and listen to what the spirit wanted me to share.  As I was listening to talk from our most recent General Conference Meeting of our church a quote really stood out to me.

"Sisters, I do not know why we have the many trials that we have, but it is my personal feeling that the reward is so great, so eternal and everlasting, so joyful and beyond our understanding that in that day of reward,we may feel to say to our merciful, loving Father, “Was that all that was required?”  As I sat with my 3 young children in Sacrament meeting trying my best to keep them quiet and sitting I kept thinking of this quote.  I was almost in tears as Kennedy kicking the bench in front of us, Gavin asked to make his 5th bathroom trip in 15 minutes and Dylan couldn't seem to keep from wrestling his brother on the pew bench.  I just wanted to run out the door and go home.

This may seem like a small trial to most, but for me it's really hard.  I try to put on a brave face, but it's a struggle every single week.  I try to do small things that make the hour more manageable.  I plan ahead, bring treats, save special activities just for Sunday and one of the things I do for me is attempt to look put together on the outside all in hopes that no one can tell I'm about to lose it on the inside.

Keeping my kids focused during church is just not what I'm really good at right now and I know that is okay.  The important thing is that we keep at it every week.  I hope my kids see that it's important not to give up on something just because it's hard.  Sometimes the hardest things in life are the ones that are the most worth while and the most rewarding.  When my kids get excited for the bread and water to come down our row or when they ask to say to be the first to say bedtime prayers, those are my rewards.  Tiny victories like those make me feel like maybe I am doing something right.

Laced Hair and a Floppy Hat

One of the things that I enjoy about Sundays is that I can get dressed up.  I enjoy putting new things together, mixing patterns and seeing what I can find on clearance to change things up.  My daily life of potty training, playing army guys and doing laundry isn't so "dress and heels friendly" so it's nice to get a break and wear those pretty things that stay tucked in my closet all week.

I'm sure that when all is said and done that I will look back at this time in life and thing, "Man did I have it easy!" but for now I will just keep doing the small things that get me through each day with a shred of sanity left.  It's all those small things that add up to a great work, raising children in a loving family.  Parenting the hardest, most important thing I will ever do in life.  Motherhood is my calling and I will be forever grateful for it, even in those moments where I feel close to the edge.  I am grateful.
