Red White and Blue Style
That's Google's definition of the American Dream, but mine is a little different. Traditionally it's linked to business or career, but my family is my American Dream. I've always wanted to be a Mom, when adults would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up my answer was always "A Mom". It was dream to make school lunches and cook Sunday dinners, to watch my daughter's dance recitals and cheer my boys on at their baseball games, to kiss boo boos and wipe tears.
I dreamed of decorating nurseries and going on bike rides, Summer trips to the lake and doing homework. I looked forward to all the little things that came with starting a family, even if they weren't all glamorous. There are so many things that come with this "Mom" title that have had me in tears of my own wishing my Mom would come save me, and may times she has. The funny thing is that those are the times that I feel the most grateful for this role. It's hard to appreciate the blessings when you are in the middle of enjoying them, often it's not until those bumps in the road come along that you have perspective to see how blessed you really are.
One of the things that Lennie and I have always wanted to do with our little family is take a big family vacation. At the beginning of this year we set a goal as a family to save enough to go to Disney Aulani in Hawaii. There were so many times where I thought that this was not going to happen, that it just wasn't in the cards for us, but we never lost hope. We kept saving and working hard. It was so great to teach the kids about making choices to forgo purchases for things they wanted as an impulse so that we could put that money aside for our trip.
Last week we booked our trip for September and paid it in full. I can not tell you how good it felt to work hard as a team to achieve that goal as a family. I love teaching my kids about hard work and going after your dreams. I want to show them they are worthy of anything they want in life and that they are capable of reaching those goals.
