I swear, I can tell when the toddler “hanger” starts to rear it’s ugly head that I am in for it. Tears, tantrums, naughty behavior…the works. Pair hanger with a picky eaters and it’s basically a kamikaze mission in parenting. I happen to be so “lucky” as to have 3 picky eaters so I am often left jumping through hoops to try and get them to eat anything. Determined to beat the hangry toddler at it’s own game I strategically developed a fail proof plan to get your picky eaters goggling up healthy snacks and keeping tantrums at bay.
1. Let your kiddo pick out a special snack of their own. Getting them involved in the shopping process helps them to feel like they are in charge of what they are eating instead of being told what to eat. When it’s their choice they are more willing finish their snack. It becomes a reward instead of a demand placed on them by Mom and Dad. 2. Encourage imaginative play with their food. The days of being told “don’t play with your food” are over. Food play is actually a very useful tool in teaching kids to expand their menu. When eating becomes a game instead of just that thing that gets in the way of play time everyone is more happy.
I created this fun printable to help the kids explore different foods. I printed it out on computer paper and chopped up fruits and cheese so the kids could make flowers using their snacks. 3. Get friends involved. I find that my kids eat better when they see other kids model the behavior. They eat all kinds of things at school that they don’t eat here at home because they are following the example of their teachers and peers. Invite a neighborhood friend over for snack time or plan a playdate to help introduce new foods. After all, eating is so much for fun with friends!
