One of the things Lennie and I really try to do is schedule playtime with the kids one on one. Kennedy gets a lot of that since the boys are in school during the day so I have to make a little bit of effort and plan for time with each of the boys doing the things they love. Gavin loves to read books, play make believe and watch YouTube videos, but Dylan has so much energy that he can’t get enough time running and jumping around outdoors. He loves sports and super heros and yelling…he LOVES yelling. Lennie and I joke that from a scale of 1 to 10 he is always at a 12.
We love to explore all the local play places around town and see how many things we can climb on or jump off of. We found this amazing area at an outdoor shopping center right across the street from the beach that has this fun, colorful, squishy floor. They usually have a set of huge foam blocks that kids can stack and build things with. It had just rained so we jumped off benches instead.
We used to ride our bikes around till the street lights came on, but with how busy life is and the accessibility of electronics I have to really make an effort to get my kids playing outside. Balanced and active play lays the foundation for a skilled, healthy, resilient, and successful society. Play is disappearing at home, in school, and in communities. 70% of moms played outside when they were kids, 31% of their kids play outside today.
Playtime is never complete without raiding Mom’s Mary Poppins bag that seems to have a never ending supply of crayons, Hot Wheels and snacks. My kids happen to be the pickiest of eaters on Earth, so when I find something they love to eat that is actually healthy I stock up so we never have to go without.
CLIF Kid® makes nutritious snacks from organic ingredients that are specially-crafted for kids’ developing taste buds and active lives. Whether on the run from soccer practice, or in between homework sessions, CLIF Kid Zbars are perfect for growing kids (and busy parents!) during playtime or anytime.
My favorite thing about spending one on one playtime with Dylan and all my kids is that we are able to set the foundation for healthy physical habits and open communication. I get to ask them about their week, their ups and downs and really get to know who they are. My hope is that as we build on this bond they will always feel comfortable to come talk with me about anything, especially as they get into the tween and teen years.
Don’t hate on our matching Bomber jackets friends. There are bonuses to being able to fit into a kids XL, twinning with your 6 year old is definitely one of them. You can shop the post below, but make sure to check out the CLIF Kid video!
